A new coordination complexes of cobalt (II) and copper (II) with Pyrrolyl-2-carboxaldehyde isonicotinylhydrazone have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductance measurements, magnetic susceptibility measurements, 1H NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, UV-Vis-absorption spectroscopy, ESR spectroscopy and thermal analysis. IR spectra suggest ligand acts as a dibasic donor coordinating through the azomethine nitrogen atom and enolic oxygen atom. ESR and ligand field spectra suggest a tetrahedral geometry for Co(II) complex and a square planar geometry for Cu(II) complexes.

In case of C-2, the I. R spectra showed that the sharp broad peak of A-1 at 3550-3400 cm-1, which was due the presence of COOH group, has been disappeared. This shows the linkage of copper with the phthaloyl-derivative of the ligand through the COOH group. Moreover, two bands of phthalimide (-C2O2N) were seen at range of 1630 and 1580 cm-1 for asymmetric and symmetric vibration, respectively. The vasym and vsym vibration values of the C-2 complex were compared with that of its ligand (A-1). The vasyn values were lowered and the vasym values were raised for the C-2, which indicates the bidentate or symmetric bonding of carboxylate group to the Cu (II).

The I. R. spectra of C-1 showed that the broad peak between 3100 to 2400 cm-1 in the spectra for TA, which was due to the presence of carboxylic (COOH) group, has been disappeared. This showed the linkage of Cu with the ligand (TA) through the hydroxyl (OH) bond of COOH group. Furthermore, the bands associated with vasym and vsym (COO) mode were stretched at range 1625 and 1350 cm-1, respectively. Comparing the vasym and vsym vibration values of the complex (C-1) with that of the ligand, it was found that vasym values were raised and vsym values were lowered for the complex. This indicates the unidentate or asymmetric bonding of carboxylate group to the Copper (II).
