A 70 degree C water bath was prepared by filling a 400 mL beaker with 200 mL of water, and the beaker was placed on the hot plate to warm.
2 g of salicylic acid were placed in a 125 mL Erlenmeyer flask.
4 mL acetic anhydride and 7 drops 85% phosphoric acid were added.
The flask was swirled to mix all reagents.
The flask was placed into the warm water bath and heated for 10 minutes.
The flask was removed from the water bath and 2 mL of ice cold distilled water was dropped in.
