interesting topic! what you need to do to develop your thesis statement is find relevant examples from both books that show how their lives were either similar or different in certain aspects. then the thesis statement you develop really depends on the evidence you found; you might say they’re either similar or different (or both) and briefly give the reasons why (those will be the body paragraphs of your essay), and finally you can make a brief judgment on whose you think was harsher (you might address that in your concluding paragraph). hope that helps, i love both those books!
