What you stock your EcoColumn with involves your goals for study, the sources of your specimens — local or purchased — and your own creativity. To apply concepts from the videos, it will help you to think about including producers, consumers, and decomposers. The simplest way to stock your EcoColumn is to collect from your local environment so that you can model the ecosystem in which you live. To provide a breadth of examples, we combined local collections with purchased specimens to make particularly diverse.

Giving students a strong grounding in the Tree of Life and webpage-building is an important first step for the project, so we started by giving an introduction to the Tree of Life. Students had to explore a scientist, created page or a treehouse in pairs and report to the class on what they had found. This activity familiarized students with a few aspects of the ToL and enabled them to interact with the site.

EcoColumn Fun! : Purpose and Hypothesis

The first step to take should you decide to try to build an ecosystem is to determine if you want to create a freshwater or marine habitat. It is advisable for beginning aquarists to choose a freshwater ecosystem, as their marine counterparts are more complicated to operate and seem to be inherently less stable. After the basic water type has been selected, decide which of the four types of ecosystems you wish to establish. After that, read the following section that describes that system and then determine what type of vessel you plan to use. Use your imagination in selecting a container to hold your ecosystem - antique bottles and vases have been used, as have five-gallon water carboys. Depending on the type of system, the top can either be left off or sealed with some temporary material such as wax.

As one of the most encompassing levels of organization in the living world, an ecosystem is defined as a community of organisms along with their physical environment. The EcoColumn (see ) is designed to model an ecosystem on a small scale. Its components include a terrestrial habitat with a compost unit and an aquatic habitat. We built ours by establishing a first and then adding to it—you can build yours the same way or as a complete system from the start.

As the project continued, we set up lessons on pH and had students begin tracking the pH of their ecobottles, and for Halloween had students make tombstones to commemorate the organisms that had died in their ecobottles. We asked them more questions about their ecobottle - specifically, what died, what thrived, and why they thought this happened.

The Life Science EcoColumn is designed as a study system for concepts addressed in the videos for Session 7 () and Session 8 (). This system provides opportunities to understand how energy is brought into the living world and transferred through food chains, and how the living and nonliving environments are intimately connected through cycles of matter.

At the end of the experiment one should be able to know what an ecosystems needs in order for it to thrive and how all the components work together to create a natural balance.
If one of the chambers fails to sustain itself, then another or all of the other chambers will be affected and/or will fail.

We also asked them to record their hypotheses for the first five days on a hypothesis chart. This chart asked them to construct a hypothesis for each organism in their ecobottle and asked them to record how they would test that hypothesis.
