The Thesis/Dissertation Defense

Van Inwagen (1998) defends the position that, althoughthe modern problem of free will has its origin in philosophicalreflections on the consequences of supposing the physical universe tobe governed by deterministic laws, the problem cannot be evaded byembracing a metaphysic (like dualism or idealism) that supposes thatagents are immaterial or non-physical. For there is more to the problem of universals than thequestion whether universals exist and the question whether, if they doexist, their existence is ante res or in rebus. Forexample, the problem of universals also includes questions about therelation between universals (if such there be) and the things that arenot universals, the things usually called particulars. Aristotle didnot consider these questions in the Metaphysics. One mighttherefore plausibly contend that only one part of the problem ofuniversals (the part that pertains to the existence and nature ofuniversals) belongs to metaphysics in the old sense.
