Inthe wheat crop, there is a close relation between the number of kernels per unitarea and the ratio between incoming radiation to the mean temperature above4.5°C (the photothermal quotient) calculated for the 30 days precedinganthesis (Fischer, 1985a). Higher radiation increases the amount ofphotosynthates available for spike growth, and lower temperatures prolong theperiod of spikelet growth and decrease competition for carbohydrates.
