To put it simply, Hobson and McCarley suggest that during REMsleep the is highly active and activity inthe brain triggers certain neurons at random (activation). Thebrain then tries to make sense of this by synthesizing the randomimpulses into what we experience as dreams, for example a celltriggering the area of the brain that controls balance may lead toa dream of falling. When we sleep, all sensory and motor input isblocked and neurons in the cerebral cortex are activated by randomimpulses; the forebrain then interprets this activity and producesthe dream.
