Photosynthesis For Kids | Cool Kid Facts

They use the sunlight and the green in their leaves to make sugars from carbon dioxide (which they breathe in through their leaves during the day) and water. This sugar is then used to give the plant energy so that it can grow. This process is called photosynthesis and is the most important process on the planet, as many other plants and animals depend on plants to survive. Most of the energy is used to make new plant material, although some of it is stored by the plant for use during the months when there is less sunlight.

The book was soon translated into many languages and became the foundation of that kind of research which in modern times led to a more basic understanding of the process of photosynthesis; however, his search for the concept of economy or balance in nature was not well understood by his contemporaries. As to the nature and origin of the oxygen which the plant emits, a controversy developed in the 1780s between Ingenhousz and Priestley. Ingenhousz thought that water which plants absorb changes into vegetation and that part of this water is then released as oxygen.

What Is Photosynthesis For Kids Facts & Information

Unlike Priestley and other chemists who were working on the characteristics of oxygen from the point of view of chemical philosophy, Ingenhousz was preoccupied by the problem of the fundamental balance in the animal and vegetable kingdoms, and this led him to investigate the mutual interdependence of plants and animals. He introduced the concept that the leaves of plants are great laboratories for cleansing and purifying the air. He also noted that oxygen is emitted by the underside of the leaves and that this is a daylight process, whereas in darkness even plants emit small quantities of carbon dioxide instead of absorbing it. In his reflections at the end of the book, Ingenhousz said, "If these conjectures were well grounded, it would throw a great deal of new light upon the arrangement of the different parts of the globe and the harmony between all its parts would become more conspicuous."

There was a time a very, very long time ago when there wasn’t much oxygen around so animals and humans couldn’t exist. Well what made it all happen? The plants of course! It was only because of photosynthesis that more and more oxygen was made which meant that animals and humans could develop. Think about it this way, without photosynthesis we wouldn’t even be around.

Facts about photosynthesis for kids - Know About Life

Mesophyll – This is the interior of the leaf between upper and lower epidermis. This is where most of the photosynthesis occurs. The Mesophyll is divided into two layers a) The upper palisade layer which is tightly packed. Beneath the palisade layer is the b) spongy layer which is, you’ve guessed it…spongy!

CI, Mn, P and are closely associated with reactions of photosynthesis

While all this is going on, the process is called photosynthesis, and then oxygen is made. But the plant doesn’t need all that oxygen so off it goes into the air and lucky for us, we can then breathe properly and stay alive.
